Glucose Test Strip

Glucose Test Strip

The Glucose test strip is specific to testing glucose (detects 0 – 3000 mg/dL or 0-3%)and is intended for educational use only. The strip can be used to measure glucose levels in osmosis/diffusion experiments, urine analysis (educational only), and food science studies.

Glucose Test Strip

  1. Remove one glucose test strip from the amber bag.
  2. Reseal the bag as soon as possible.
  3. Do not touch the test pad with your fingers.
  4. Completely immerse the test pad into specimen for 1-2 seconds.
  5. Run the test strip along the edge of the container to remove excess liquid.
  6. Compare to the color chart after 2 minutes for urine test, or after 3 minutes for water solutions of glucose.

NOTE: The Glucose test strip is not intended for medical diagnosis. Should you decide to test your urine & you get a positive result you should report it to your physician and test your blood sugar levels.

NOTE: In solutions containing oxidizers, a false positive may be observed.

NOTE: The glucose test strips use an enzyme that is specific for glucose. In order for the enzyme to work properly, the glucose needs to undergo mutarotation. In water samples, this process can take up to 3 hours.

Product Documentation

Can the Glucose test strips be used to test food samples?

The Glucose test strips were originally developed to test for glucose levels in urine for educational purposes (not medical diagnosis). Other uses include osmosis experiments where a glucose/starch solution is used to demonstrate the concept in a classroom setting.

The strips will also detect glucose levels in food, however, there are several things to consider:

1)  The enzyme used to detect the glucose is specific for glucose sugar. Other sugars will not be detected by the test strip.

2)  While exclusive for glucose sugar, other chemicals can interfere. The best (or worst) example is Vitamin C. The strips will not work well with foods high in Vitamin C.

3)  In order for the enzyme to work properly, the solution being tested may need to sit for up to 3 hours to allow mutarotation to occur.

What do the Glucose test strips detect?

These test strips are selective for glucose. You will not get a reaction with soft drinks or regular sugar, as they primarily contain fructose or sucrose. In solutions containing oxidizers (for example, iodine solutions in diffusion/osmosis experiments), a false blank may be observed.
